To me Kaikoura is about a big ocean, big mountains and a big (sometimes not friendly) sky. I am always on the lookout for images that portray this for me and currently the sky features a lot in my images. For me the sky helps capture the size and the untamed moodiness of this place.
When I saw the Morrie parked on the foreshore it worked perfectly with what I’m trying to capture lately. It was sitting in a little pool of light all on it’s own but surrounded by a huge angry sky. In a bold act of defiance the little Morrie is saying ‘just you look at me’ to the weather gods. It inspires bit of light and strength to me.

Fantastic photo, Andrew!

It's an interesting vision of Kaikoura too. I tend to think big rocks, big cliff, big seals, but you're totally right about the sea and sky. And I think your photo says exactly what you say it does.

Cheers, Rebecca

Andrew:
It gives a new perspective on Kaikoura for me, too. I've been there only a few times and just briefly, but my mental image is of dominating mountains, weirdly-shaped rocks, and the sweep of sea close to shore. That is some sky! What makes the image for me is the patch of light cloud above the vehicle (a sort of aerial reflection) pushing at the darkest patch on the right. The Morris made me feel nostalgic. We had a green one of these once, but green wouldn't have had the effect here that this off-white one does.

Hey thanks for the comments Rebecca and Peregrina.
Peregrina, this whole Morris thing brings a different perspective into my picture I realise, I'm old enough for Morries to have an impact on my soul too. I know when I made the picture I had no emotive attachment to the Morris, It was a shape that figured in the design of my picture. What a timeless picture huh.
Hey Guys, thanks for the comments. Tony, thanks for the opportunity. I don't mind at all being a test case. What a privilege for me.
Guys please bring it on with the comments. I am more than receptive to constructive criticism. I don't really care what you think or say about my images. My mission is to evoke thoughts and to make compelling images. I challenge you to tell me what is wrong with the composition, exposure or whatever with my image. I'll learn from whatever you say and I'll be happy to comment on your image when you post it. If you need to know any more about the technical or emotive aspects of my picture, ask me.
I'm overwhelmed that my image is the first posted on Tony's challenge. Come on Guys, lets give this blog the kick in the butt that Tony enjoys. He loves our input and feedback. I learn more here than I do anywhere on the web, and believe me, I get around. Lets give Tony the feedback he needs to give us the inspiration to make kick-ass life changing inspirational images.
One thing I've noticed in my - short photography career is that if you don't show anyone your photos then how the hell is anyone going to know you are a photographer. Come on guys, it's a challenge, email Tony your images.
Thanks again Rebecca and Peregrina and thanks again Tony. What a great place huh.
